Alumni Successful Sobriety Strategies
Bay Area Recovery Center’s Alumni are an important part of the recovery process. Alumni are individuals who have successfully completed their programs, have remained in recovery, and continue to return to our facilities to provide peer support.
Our Alumni Association organizes sober BBQs, camping trips, dances, and other recreational activities. These events provide opportunities for newcomers to meet people in similar situations as them, gain a sense of community, and have fun while remaining sober. BARC alumni also facilitate a weekly group session at our inpatient facilities where they provide support and encouragement, answer questions about recovery after treatment, and share their experience.
When a newcomer is first admitted to Bay Area Recovery Center they will be introduced to their Primary Counselor, nursing staff, and other support and direct care staff. They will be introduced to other clients at the facility and any alumni present as well. The presence of individuals who have been through the program and CHOOSE to come back and participate is powerful. They provide guidance and hope to the newcomer.
Sharing Recovery with New Clients
Due to the nature of Bay Area Recovery Center’s intensive program, people who complete their treatment plan goals often find it worthwhile to participate in alumni activities. Where they were once the newcomer, beaten down by addiction and substance abuse, they are now the sober mentor, offering guidance and hope to the new man or woman.
The benefits of BARC’s Alumni program are cyclical; the help and healing is always paid forward to the next individual. A man or woman may arrive at our facility totally broken in body, mind, and spirit, beaten down by substance abuse and alcohol addiction. They meet an alumni who tells them they felt that way once, maybe even just a few months before, but they’ve found a new way to live. After throwing themselves into recovery and experiencing a vital change, that same person who was so beaten on admission, then returns a few short months later, as an alumni ready to pass on the experience, strength, and hope that was given to them.
