1st Annual Running Towards Recovery 5k will Help Offset Treatment Costs
When a loved one is struggling with alcoholism or substance use addiction it often can be challenging to get them to accept help. They may say that can stop on their own, or maybe not even accept they have a problem. Getting a person to see the need and agree to substance abuse treatment can be such a difficult task that sometimes people seek out interventionists to aid them.
But when a loved one finally does agree to seek treatment there is often a small window before their motivation to change runs dry. In that small window the last thing you want to have to worry about is how to pay for treatment.
In Texas there are usually 3 different ways to pay for substance abuse treatment; self-pay, with health insurance, and with state funding.
- Self-pay: If you and your family have the means to pay out of pocket you might be able to find a space in a substance abuse facility rather quickly. This payment route is often to best way for a quick and easy admission into your preferred facility. The drawback is you have to pay out of pocket or your family has to pools their resources to get their loved one into treatment.
- Health Insurance: In this payment option the out of pocket costs may be less than self-pay. Some health insurance plans can offset some of the costs from the individual or family. As long as you pay your premiums, deductibles, and copays, the health insurance may cover a portion of the treatment stay. A drawback to this option is the health insurance has a say in the amount they’ll pay and the duration of your stay. The length of treatment is no longer only decided by patient and provider but by a third party payer who may only pay for a 14 day stay in treatment rather than the 30 day stay that is needed.
- State Funding: The last major option in paying for treatment is state funding. The State of Texas has provided grants to each county to provide funds for people who cannot afford treatment and don’t have medical insurance. A positive to this option is that there is no out of pocket costs. The downside is there can be a pretty extensive assessment period and wait time. You may not be able to choose when and where the treatment is received either. If someone struggling with opiate addiction has to wait days or weeks for a bed to open up somewhere, the motivation to change may decrease the longer they have to wait.
Luckily there is soon to be a 4th option. A local 501(c)3 non-profit has been established with the goal to raise scholarship funds for people who cannot afford treatment on their own. Renewed Hope was created by 3 alumni of Bay Area Recovery Center who want to help other alcoholics and addicts gain the same sense of freedom they have achieved. They are hoping to gain funding to provide treatment opportunities for individuals suffering from addiction who cannot afford treatment, and get them into treatment during that small window of willingness.
In order to achieve this goal of providing substance abuse treatment scholarships, Renewed Hope is hosting a charity 5k called Running Towards Recovery. The event will happen at Hometown Heroes Park in League City, Texas on November 17, 2024. Registration and donations can be made online here. Food trucks, face painting, bounce houses (and more!) will be available! Please come, donate if you can, and experience the recovery community. 100% of all funds collected will go towards paying for substance abuse treatment for individuals in need.
